Sun Eagle (1R5) won the prize for Most Environmentally-themed Car.

The six Simple Machines are:
1. Lever
2. Inclined Plane
3. Screw
4. Wheel and Axle
5. Wedge
6. Pulley

Gear is a form of wheel and axle.
A knife or an ax is a wedge made up of two inclined planes joined together.
A doorstop is a wedge made of a single inclined plane.
A screw has inclined plane wrapped around its shaft.
Some uses of screws: bottle screw cap, nut and bolt, vice and clamp, car jack, water tap, tunnelling machine, water pump, etc.

Use Google, Yahoo or search from CmapTools to find more resources.

Use Google Images to search for images of Simple Machines. Use these images as a background for your concepts.
Do add many resources to your concepts. Resources include photos, graphics, animations, videos, sound clips, powerpoint file, document file, hyperlink, etc.

Please submit your Cmaps and resources by 8 March 2010.

Marking of Journal (CA2)

Hi Sec 2 Designers,

You are to submit your journals by 24 August '09 (Mon) for marking.

For this submission, the following components of your journal will be marked:

Part 1 (10 Marks):

Selection of festival and colour theme (include reason)
Design Brief
Design Specification

Part 2 (10 Marks):
Research

product analysis of at least 5 existing products
research on needs and values of users (image board)
consideration of design factors (mindmap)

Part 3 (10 Marks):
Ideation

3D sketches with annotations of your designs (5 or more distinct designs)
demonstration on use of SCAMPER, shape borrowing, random trigger lines
evaluation of your designs (against design specification)
indicate your final selected design

The above marks will count towards CA2.

Notes:
Parent's signatures for month of July and August must be obtained.
Indicate name, index number and class clearly.

Warning:

Sec 1 D&T - Review of Journals

Hi Sec 1 D&T Pupils,

I have reviewed some of your journals. Here are my general comments for improvement.

1) How a Design Manager should proceed? (page 1 of handout)
Many of you answered out of point. Some wrote "product must be attractive", "product must have element of fun", etc.
How do you know all these in the first place? Was there research? Elaborate! To answer correctly, refer to the Design Model. Where does design start and how? Refer to pages 70-71, 76-81 of textbook.

2) Design Needs for this Problem Situation (page 1 of handout)
What are the existing problems? Describe.

3) Mindmap
Many did not have this. What were your design considerations (see page 80 of textbook)? Put your considerations on mindmap. Include in Journal.

4) Imageboard
Use visual references (see page 78 of textbook). Create an image board and include in Journal.

5) Design Brief
Try keeping to just one sentence. Refer to page 79 of textbook.

6) Design Specification
Use complete sentences. Many of you repeated specification 2 already stated in the handout. Do not duplicate.
Almost none of you specified the number of CDs to store... why?

7) Ideation Sketches
Please draw in 3D. Remember SCAMPER and shape borrowing. Modify from existing products?

8) Development
Must improve on chosen idea.
Put in dimensions. You need dimensions to build the model, right?
Have you done measurements?
Evaluate against specification.

9) Presentation Drawing
Draw in 3D and make sure it illustrates the CDs and usage. Colour it. Refer to page 124 of textbook.

Dear Sec 1 D&T students,

I hope you have started your research for the CD Holder Project.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself:
Size of CD?
Use with jewel case or without case? Survey users?
How many CDs to store? Needs of users?
Wall-mount?
Portable?
Protect against dust? Office in construction site?
Protect against water spill?
Easy to use? Safe to use? Consider users with disabilities?
Protect against theft?
Stackable / modular / flat-pack? Consider sustainability?
Element of fun :) ?
What else can the CD Holder do?
... ask yourself more questions (and do ask questions in your journal).

Remember, your design should be based on the needs of the users (survey, talk to users).

The above would help you in formulating your design brief and specification.

Find at least 10 existing CD Holders in the market (product research and analysis). Comment on existing designs.

Remember to reflect all your research, questions, thoughts and feelings in your Journal!
